Because sometimes, we all need to be distracted.

"Life's a bitch, and then you die."

Life can be hard. And whether you're trying not to think about something, or you're trying to quit a negative behaviour, I'm hoping this blog can give you some ideas on how to better use your time (or brain space).

Every day, I'm going to post an idea of something you can do that will hopefully take your mind off of things. There are a lot of harmful behaviours we can engage in, in order to escape something. My goal is to make it easy to find the options that can have a similar effect, without the negative consequences.

1. Listen to Music

You can listen to your CD's, or music on youtube, or amazing radio stations at this website: http://www.filtermusic.net/

Music has the potential to make us feel alive, to take us away, to make us feel beauty.

Here are a few of my favourite songs (and please, post your own!):

- Benny Benassi vs. Public Enemy "Bring the Noise"
- David Guetta vs. The Egg
- Michael Buble "Haven't Met You Yet"
- Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody"

As always, feel free to send me ideas for distractions. We could all benefit from having healthy options available!

  1. While music is pleasing and I am enjoying a renewed interest in expanding my musical vocabulary of late, I don't feel that it keeps me from getting up from my work to go aimlessly browse the fridge or other unhealthy idle habits that get me off task. It may even encourage me to go get drunk with friends (*gasp*).

I have found exercise to be an excellent and healthy distraction. I went out and bought a fancy new bike that I ride uphill through the park behind my house and I think it's doing me worlds of good.

  2. Jesse - That is a valid point.

I'm hoping that one day this blog will have numerous ideas for people to browse, so that they may opt for the idea that suits them best. :)

Exercise is a great suggestion! Thanks for your input.

  3. Cooking too. It's almost meditative for me. Something about taking a full clove of garlic and some rosemary from the yard and cleaning and chopping them to add to whatever. It really relaxes me and makes me feel better about my day, for whatever reason..

Yard work works too. Really any sort of labor that you don't have to think about too much, especially if this is not in your job description. There's this Jim Carrey movie where Morgan Freeman plays god, and he forces Jim to mop a large floor after he's been playing god. Not the best movie, but an important lesson..

I'm sure there a number of timeless quotes that convey the same idea, but they're not occurring to me right now.

    OK, net search yielded this-

"idle hands are the devil's workshop"

I was trying to find something about working hard but I ran into an internet wall of crap. So I quit.
